Neonatal
Why do parents choose to have their baby circumcised?
Circumcision may have a variety of benefits, including:
- Hygiene – Circumcision can assist in making it easier to wash the penis as the foreskin is removed.
- Circumcision may decrease the risk of a urinary tract infection – although the risk may be low in males.
- Circumcision may be required to manage some skin problems known as balanitis xerotica obliterans.

Adults
Why do adults choose to be circumcised?
- Circumcision may prevent some penile problems – it may be the case that the foreskin on an uncircumcised penis can be difficult to retract, known as phimosis, leading to inflammation of the foreskin or head of the penis, known as Balanitis.
- Circumcision may Decrease the risk of sexually transmitted diseases(STD) – circumcised men might have a lower risk of contracting an STD., as the foreskin may act as a reservoir for STD., but safe sexual practices are still necessary.
- Circumcision may decrease the risk of penile cancer. Although cancer of the penis is rare, it’s less common in circumcised men.
- Circumcision may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
- Circumcision may reduce the risk of transmission of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), reducing the risk of their partner getting cervical cancer.
- Circumcision may reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission. Circumcision has a high prevalence as a preventive measurement in some African countries.
- The adult/ parent may have their belief, i.e., ritual cultural-religious reasons, son like dad, sexual pleasure.

Women
Are there any benefits for women?
Women are at much lower risk of diseases if their male partner is circumcised for the following risks:-
- Lower risk of infectious bacteria and viruses that accumulate under the foreskin is delivered into the female genital tract during sex—so there is a reduced risk of genital herpes and bacterial vaginosis.
- The women have a lower risk of having cervical cancer caused by the male partner passing on the human papillomavirus (HPV).
- The circumcised partner reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) such as chlamydia, HIV/AIDS, and syphilis. So relieved the risk of infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease.
- The circumcised partner has no malodorous smegma and associated infection on the penis during sex.
- It improved the sexual experience through better hygiene and increased penile-vaginal contact.
Risks
Why do parents choose NOT to have their babies circumcised?
- Parents may wish to preserve their newborn child’s natural state and avoid surgical intervention unless it is essential.
- Any surgical procedure carries some risk, which is also the case for Circumcision.
- Complications are uncommon, usually temporary but include local infection, local bleeding, and rarely damage to the tip of the penis. However, occasionally penis may embed in supra-pubic fat, that is, fat surrounding the groin area; even it may cause the foreskin to reclose on the glans, known as secondary phimosis, requiring follow-up and may need surgical correction if conservative management or natural healing fails.
- Circumcision can be painful for the child at the operation and for a little while afterward. There are some reasons why parents choose not to have their sons circumcised:
Circumcision can be risky for babies because their mothers may have a bleeding disorder or carry the genetic susceptibility to develop haemophilia.
Conclusion
Adults, parents, and guardians need to be aware that there are conflicting points of view about the risks and possible benefits of circumcision.
Male Circumcision is the most performed surgical procedure globally. Evidence-based policies by major medical bodies such as the American Academy of Paediatrics and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention advocate the Circumcision of boys and men because of its health benefits. These include reducing the risk of infections, including urinary tract infections in infancy and sexually transmitted infections later. The procedure prevents or reduces the risk of foreskin problems such as phimosis and inflammatory conditions. Circumcision protects against life-threatening penile, prostate, and cervical cancer in female sexual partners.
Recent research findings attest to the wisdom of Circumcision as a highly beneficial, safe prophylactic procedure in recent years. The definitive statement is that “prevention is better than cure,” So don’t wait till a medical problem has arisen.
Thus, Circumcision provides a substantial benefit to public health and promotes individual wellbeing.
